Understanding the Rise of Low-Quality AI Content

If you’ve spent time on YouTube Shorts or TikTok recently, you’ve probably come across videos that feel a little… strange. Animals standing on two legs while rapping fluently in Korean, fruit with eyes and mouths acting out dramatic storylines or bizarre AI-generated characters such as Tralalero Tralala and Tung Tung Tung Sahur that suddenly became global internet sensations in 2025. At first, these surreal creations made people uncomfortable because they looked nothing like reality. Today, however, they have become a form of entertainment in their own right.

What’s interesting is that even when we recognize these videos as strange, we often keep scrolling and watching. That experience now has an official name: AI Slop. Originally an internet slang term, AI slop entered mainstream vocabulary in 2025. Merriam-Webster even selected “slop” as its Word of the Year, defining it as “low-quality digital content produced in large quantities by AI.”

One thing is clear. AI slop is no longer just a concern for content creators or a trend limited to one country. It represents a structural shift in the global information ecosystem. As using ChatGPT or image-generation AI becomes part of everyday work, this is no longer someone else’s problem. It directly affects our brands, our content and even the feeds our children scroll through. Most of us already live on both sides of this trend. We use AI to draft reports or generate ideas at work while consuming AI-generated Shorts and Reels during our commute or before going to bed. Rather than arguing that AI should be avoided, this article explores how AI is reshaping the content landscape and what those changes mean for businesses, marketers and everyday users.

What Does AI Slop Actually Mean?

The word “slop” originally referred to leftover food fed to livestock. Combined with AI, it has come to describe low-quality AI-generated content produced at scale with little planning, oversight or human verification. Much of this content is designed to maximize algorithmic reach and engagement rather than deliver meaningful value. The greatest concern is not simply poor-quality videos but content that packages inaccurate or misleading information in ways that appear convincing.

It is important not to confuse AI-generated content with AI slop. Using ChatGPT to create a first draft or image-generation tools to produce visuals has become a normal part of modern work. When used responsibly, these tools improve productivity and creativity. The problem begins when content is published without verification or accountability simply to chase views and advertising revenue. Think of it this way: instant noodles are not inherently unhealthy, but eating them for every meal without considering nutrition is. Likewise, when AI-generated content fills search results and recommendation feeds without proper review, we begin to face a new kind of information imbalance.

How Fast Is AI Slop Spreading?

The feeling that AI-generated content is becoming impossible to ignore is not just a perception. According to Meltwater, mentions of “AI Slop” increased ninefold in 2025 compared to the previous year. By October, negative sentiment surrounding the term had reached 54%. Euronews even described 2025 as the year AI slop went mainstream. The way content is created has also reached a turning point. Graphite found that in May 2025, approximately 52% of English-language online articles were written by humans while 48% were generated by AI. By November of the same year, AI-generated articles had surpassed human-written articles for the first time.

The shift becomes even clearer when looking at the web as a whole. Ahrefs analyzed roughly 900,000 newly crawled web pages in April 2025 and found that 74.2% contained AI-generated content. Of those, 2.5% were created entirely by AI while 71.7% combined AI and human input. Research citing Oxford also found that AI-generated content grew from around 5% of online content in 2020 to approximately 48% by May 2025 and is projected to exceed 90% by 2026. As search rankings become less reliable as a measure of quality, the more important question is no longer “How highly does this content rank?” but rather “Who created it and how was it produced?”

The trend is even more apparent when broken down by platform. Kapwing analyzed 10,742 TikTok videos and found that nearly 59% of recommendations shown to new accounts qualified as AI slop. On YouTube Shorts, the figure ranged from 21% to 33%. As of the first quarter of 2026, an estimated 49.9% of English-language web articles contained AI-generated text. Music streaming platform Deezer was receiving around 90,000 AI-generated tracks every day by June 2026, accounting for more than half of all newly uploaded songs. The pattern is clear. AI slop is not spreading randomly. It spreads fastest on platforms built around short, highly engaging interactions such as TikTok, Shorts and music streaming.

Children’s content is an especially concerning area. Between the first quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026, AI-generated children’s videos on YouTube increased by approximately 487%. The share of AI-generated uploads in new children’s content also rose sharply from 3–5% to 18–23%. One study even found that 97% of videos tagged #CartoonKids were classified as AI slop. Children’s content can easily cross language barriers because it often relies on visuals rather than dialogue. It also benefits from repeated viewing and generally faces less scrutiny than content intended for adults. While this makes it highly efficient for creators, the real cost is paid through children’s attention, learning environment and long-term media consumption habits.

South Korea: The World’s Largest Consumer and Producer of AI Content

Which country consumes the most AI slop? According to a 2026 report by antislop.online, South Korea ranks first in AI slop consumption per capita, followed by Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany. This suggests that AI slop is not concentrated in developing markets but thrives in countries with the most advanced digital infrastructure. Given South Korea’s world-leading mobile internet speeds, smartphone adoption and digital media consumption, it is perhaps no surprise that algorithm-driven content spreads there faster than anywhere else.

South Korea’s influence extends beyond consumption. Kapwing’s analysis of the world’s top 100 YouTube channels found that just 11 Korean AI slop channels generated a combined 8.45 billion views, outperforming Pakistan with 5.34 billion and the United States with 3.39 billion. Four of the world’s ten highest-performing AI channels are also estimated to be Korean. Spain still leads in subscriber count with roughly 20.22 million subscribers but South Korea generates the highest number of views, demonstrating an exceptional ability to optimize content for recommendation algorithms rather than subscriber growth alone. Researchers estimate that this ecosystem generates approximately US$117 million in annual advertising revenue. Some international media outlets have even described it as an “AI slop gold rush.”

This gold rush highlights how mature algorithm optimization and automated content production have become. Imagine applying those same capabilities not to low-quality viral content but to trustworthy information and meaningful brand storytelling. If today’s algorithms reward attention, tomorrow’s competitive advantage may belong to organizations that combine those technologies with credibility, expertise and human judgment.

Common Types of AI Slop

AI slop does not always look the same. According to reports from Kapwing and other researchers, it generally falls into four categories. The first is Brainrot, content that repeatedly delivers random or overstimulating scenes without a meaningful narrative. The second is Emotional Blackmail, which relies on exaggerated emotional appeals or even religious guilt to capture attention. The third is Split Screen, where unrelated visuals and narration are shown simultaneously to maximize watch time. The final category targets children by using bright colors, repetitive patterns and simple visual storytelling designed to hold attention for as long as possible.

Although these formats differ, they share one defining characteristic. They are designed to keep people watching even when there is little meaningful information to remember afterward. If you’ve found yourself watching one of these videos, there’s no reason to feel embarrassed. They are carefully engineered to capture human attention. Recognizing that fact is the first step toward making more intentional choices about what we consume.

Why Does AI Slop Matter?

Reduced Attention Spans and Critical Thinking

The impact of AI slop extends far beyond low-quality content. Researchers increasingly warn that repeated exposure to short, highly stimulating content may reduce attention span and weaken critical thinking over time. The concern is even greater for children and teenagers. Constant exposure to AI-generated dialogue, unnatural language and fragmented storytelling may influence how they understand communication and process information. Adults are generally better equipped to recognize questionable content but younger audiences are still developing the ability to distinguish reliable information from misleading material.

A Decline in Information Quality and Trust

AI slop also affects the broader information ecosystem. As AI-generated spam, misinformation and low-value content continue to grow, it becomes increasingly difficult to determine what is accurate and trustworthy. Some researchers describe this phenomenon as the “Slop Economy,” where platforms reward the mass production of low-quality content because it generates engagement and advertising revenue. Others warn that heavy reliance on free digital platforms may widen what has been called an “information nutrition” gap, exposing some users to significantly lower-quality information than others.

A New Brand Safety Challenge for Businesses

For businesses, AI slop is no longer a distant issue. According to a Q1 2026 report from TAG and ANA, AI slop websites accounted for between 1.3% and 2.4% of open-web programmatic advertising spend. In other words, brands may unknowingly appear alongside low-quality AI-generated content. At the same time, as consumers increasingly rely on generative AI search and chatbots, poor-quality data can influence how AI systems describe brands. Brand safety is no longer limited to where advertisements appear. It now includes how AI models learn, interpret and present your brand to potential customers.

The Impact on Democracy and Public Decision-Making

Perhaps the most far-reaching consequence is its impact on democracy. A 2025 report from the Kevin Ryan Institute (KRI) found that 80% of the 50 elections held worldwide in 2024 experienced incidents involving generative AI and 69% of those incidents had harmful effects. Deepfake campaign videos, fabricated polling results and AI-generated misinformation have the potential to undermine not only individual judgment but also public trust in institutions and democratic processes. Ultimately, AI slop is more than a content problem. It is an issue that affects personal attention, public trust, corporate reputation and the quality of decision-making across society.

How Platforms and Regulators Are Responding

Platforms Are Beginning to Push Back

Major platforms have started taking action against AI slop. Google is refining its search algorithms to reduce the visibility of mass-produced AI content farms designed solely to generate traffic. YouTube now labels AI-generated videos and limits monetization for repetitive or low-value AI content through its YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Meta has also strengthened disclosure requirements for AI-generated images and videos shared on Facebook and Instagram.

Regulation Is Moving Toward Greater Transparency

Governments and regulators are moving in the same direction. In South Korea, discussions continue around requiring AI-generated images and videos to include visible labels or watermarks. Across Europe, policymakers are focusing on improving transparency and traceability as synthetic content becomes more widespread. As AI-generated media continues to grow, clearer disclosure standards are expected to become the norm.

Preparing Before Regulations Catch Up

For businesses, these developments represent more than regulatory compliance. Organizations that establish clear internal standards for AI use, human review and content disclosure will be better positioned to build long-term trust with customers. While additional review processes and labeling requirements may seem burdensome today, transparency is likely to become a competitive advantage as AI-generated content becomes increasingly common.

Brand and Content Strategy in the Age of AI Slop

As AI slop becomes more widespread, the competitive advantage of brand content will not be determined by how extensively AI is used but by how trustworthy the information is. AI can be a powerful tool for drafting content, generating ideas and improving production efficiency. However, factual accuracy, brand voice and editorial judgment should never be delegated entirely to AI. Content supported by reliable data, credible sources and real-world expertise will continue to stand apart from low-quality AI-generated material.

Brand safety is also taking on a broader meaning. In the past, businesses focused on where their advertisements appeared. Today, they must also consider how generative AI systems learn about their brand and how that information is presented to users. This means regularly reviewing programmatic advertising placements, excluding websites associated with AI slop where appropriate and monitoring how AI-powered search engines and chatbots describe the company’s products, services and expertise.

Perhaps the most important step is establishing clear internal governance. Organizations should define where AI can be used, where human review is required and how AI-generated content should be disclosed when necessary. These guidelines are not simply about regulatory compliance. They are essential for maintaining quality, consistency and trust. As AI-generated content becomes increasingly common, audiences will place greater value on information that has been carefully verified and responsibly produced.

Conclusion

AI slop is not a passing trend. It reflects a fundamental shift in how information is created, distributed and consumed in the era of generative AI. The amount of AI-generated content will continue to grow and that is unlikely to change. The real challenge is no longer whether to use AI but how to combine its speed with credibility, expertise and human judgment. Organizations that succeed will not necessarily be those producing the most content but those producing the most trustworthy content.

The same principle applies to business decision-making. AI can quickly summarize markets, organize information and identify patterns but important decisions still require industry knowledge, practical experience and context that only people can provide. The strongest outcomes come from combining AI-driven efficiency with expert validation rather than relying on either one alone.

At <a href="https://liahnson-remember.com/client/project/detail?utm_source=homepage&utm_medium=homepage_blog&utm_campaign=post_case_study&utm_content=What Is AI Slop?
